Sr. Database Engineer

Position Summary:

Working from our Columbia office, the Senior  Database Engineer is part of a team that is responsible for maintaining our production systems. 


Coordinates response to critical production events and outages when they occur;
Provides detailed and timely status updates to direct supervisors and leadership;
Makes emergency changes to the production environment;
Works with database engineers, software engineers, systems administrators, and network engineers to solve infrastructural and performance problems;
Assists and mentors engineers by providing technical guidance, insight, recommendations and technical requirements;
Maintains technical knowledge and understanding of the latest development methodologies and best practices by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations; and
Other duties as assigned.



The individual in this position will be working with a team of engineers to ensure that our production systems are available and responsive for our users.  Due to the nature of this position, the applicant will need the ability to work from home or during off-hours as necessary.  Candidates must have:

A comprehensive understanding of database structures, database administration, and query optimization
At least six years experience doing full time administration of Microsoft SQL Server, with at least two of those years spent with SQL Server 2008/2012
Recently been a successful SQL Server 2008/2012 database administrator maintaining OLTP databases with hundreds of tables, thousands of transactions per second, and/or thousands of simultaneous users (via application or Web pooled connections)
Excellent SQL skills, with the ability to generate complex SQL queries
Excellent query tuning skills
Experience performing database maintenance tasks including index maintenance, consistency checks, corruption recovery, log shipping, database backup and restore, and resource governance
The ability to troubleshoot critical performance problems in a production database system during a crisis;
An extremely detail-oriented work ethic
Excellent communication skills with the ability to understand user requests and translate them into technical requirements
High-speed Internet access at home and a personal computer.

In addition, the ideal candidate will have:

Experience developing for SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server Integration Services
Excellent schema design skills with the ability to design and refactor database schemas for maximum storage and querying efficiency
Experience with CLR stored procedures and functions
Familiarity with C# programming and web application architecture
Experience supporting Microsoft server applications including SQL Server, SQL Server Reporting Services, and IIS in a production environment
Experience installing and administering Windows Server 2008/2012 and SQL Server 2008/2012
Experience with storage area networks and local storage hardware
Experience with server hardware and configurations
