• Present 2 research findings/presentations at lab meetings, attend 23 lab meetings; and attend 2 scientific meetings or symposia per year

• Prepare supporting author scientific papers for publication.

• Attend 12 division meetings per year and give 1 presentation per scientist

• Complete 4 quarterly reports and 1 annual progress reports for DTRA per investigator

• Prepare one 1st author manuscript for publication per year

• Prepare supporting author scientific papers for publication.

• Use computer to analyze data, prepare graphs, do statistics, write lab notes and reports.

• Conduct transcriptome analyses to better understand bacterial pathogenesis and design vaccines and therapeutics.

• Create 6 non-BSAT strains for the production of Bacillus anthracis capsule

• Add capsule operon and other control elements in Bacillus anthracis Live Attenuated Vaccine strains performing approximately 18 genetic manipulations per year.

• Perform approximately 3 conjugations per month for strain construction and screen approximately >200 colonies for correct genetic and phenotypic characterizations.

• Perform 6 x 24 PCR reactions for genetic confirmation of strains.

• Create approximately 10 genetic knockouts in Francisella tularensis and Bacillus anthracis for vaccine studies per year

• Make and characterize approximately 48 mutant bacterial strains per year.

• Perform approximately 24 MSD protein assays per year.

• Run approximately 208 PCRs and gel electrophoresis per year.

• Plan and assist in approximately 52 animal experiments per year.

• Analyze approximately 200 animal data sheets per year.

• Prepare approximately 40 DNA/RNA from bacteria and tissues per year.

• Prepare BSL2, BSL3 labs for Safety, Bio-surety and CDC inspections 4 per year

• Run approximately 100 ELISA tests to support anthrax vaccine studies.

• Run approximately 50 ELISAs and other tests [gel electrophoreses] to quantitate and analyze B. anthracis capsule to support anthrax vaccine studies per year.

• Write, plan and execute 2 animal protocols to evaluate experimental anthrax vaccines.

• Assist in 3 animal protocols conducted by other investigators.

• Prepare approximately 20 cultures of B. anthracis for vaccine studies in BSL-3 containment.  

• Prepare spores for animal challenges for analysis of animal immune response to vaccine. 

• Organize approximately 15 airlock decontaminations per year.

• Complete approximately 50 bacterial opsonization assays to evaluate experimental anthrax vaccines.

• Conduct Equipment Inventory Management twice a year in BSL-2 and BSL-3

• Perform monthly Laboratory Management to include safety functions and chemical inventory
