Sr. Accountant for Property Management Company

The position is responsible for the accounting operations of the management company, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk and errors. Must comply with generally accepted accounting principles and company standards designed to meet client needs. Must be able to work on either cash or modified accrual basis.

Principal Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

Management

Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures and calendar
Must be familiar with electronic banking functions
Prepare annual corporate budget and periodic financial analysis
Manage outsourced functions such as payment coupon orders and payroll functions
Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives
Oversee the accounting staff to ensure on-time completion of accounting tasks, including but not limited to those listed below.
Maintain a system of checks-and-balances over accounting transactions, including cross-training of accounting staff

Specific Tasks

Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner for corporate, communities and rental properties
Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly (rents, dues, as well as corporate contracts)
Manage the assessment of and notification of late fees, penalties and fines
Send periodic payment notices to homeowners
Turn accounts over to attorneys as required
Monitor attorneys’ collection efforts
Process payroll in a timely manner
Ensure that periodic bank and credit card reconciliations are completed
Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis
Maintain the chart of accounts
Maintain an orderly electronic filing system
Assist managers with preparation of association budgets
Monitor status of tax returns and audits, provide assistance to client auditors, as needed

Reporting

Issue timely and complete financial statements for clients and for executive team
Produce timely and correct collections reports
Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
Maintain and/or implement software packages as may be needed to perform duties
Provide reports for audits as required

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in accounting
10+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience
5+ years’ experience in rental or community association management experience, or ability to show in-depth knowledge of laws regulating industry
Experience in industry software a plus
First-in-class customer service skills
Proven track record in employee management

Primarily in an office environment. May require long periods of sitting or standing, talking on telephone, close computer work. May require lifting of records boxes when setting up new accounts or managing records storage in separate but on-site location. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
